Open Educational Resources (OER)

This year, key constituencies at UMW are  working towards building an awareness of and a deeper understanding of the use of Open Educational Resources (OER) to support student learning.

OER are free and openly licensed materials for teaching and learning.

Fall, 2017 faculty survey found that only 12% had a solid understanding of OER. 25% of the faculty cited lack of awareness of open textbooks in their field.

The Florida Virtual Campus (2016) Textbook and Course Materials Survey reported that 66% of students (22,906) did not purchase the required textbook.

As part of developing awareness of OER, The CTE&I took the lead in developing the UMW textbook video to highlight some of the costs associated with textbooks, as well as, are students even buying required texts.
