Department Level Grant

The Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation (CTE&I) is pleased to announce a call for Department-level Instructional Innovation Grants and will provide funds (up to $5,000) for small-scale projects to improve existing courses, develop new courses, evaluate instruction, and assess curricular needs. Grant funds can be used to support larger innovative projects that will directly and significantly affect teaching and learning, such as developing materials for new and existing courses and developing new modes of instruction. CTE&I would like to fund projects that will have a lasting impact on a program, department, or course, not just on a single semester’s offering.

Department-level Instructional Innovation Grants offer several focus areas and encourage projects that: a) promote active learning and engagement, b) infuse effective technology integration, c) support open digital scholarship, d) enhance diversity and inclusivity, e) enhance service learning and civic engagement, f) create leadership opportunities, g) construct and implement effective study groups, h) involve students in course/program assessment or redesign, or, i) improve classroom assessment. CTE&I especially welcomes grant proposals that touch upon multiple focus areas; multi-disciplinary or team-taught projects; projects that involve large lecture classes, particularly at the lower division level; and classes that have multiple sections and/or are heavily subscribed.

The intent of the Department-level Instructional Innovation Grants is to encourage innovation; therefore, CTE&I does not anticipate providing repeated support for projects. CTE&I strongly encourages Colleges, Departments, and Programs to provide such continuing support for successful projects initiated under these grants.

*Note: grants are awarded January through early May. Be sure to plan ahead and submit proposals before April 29, 2014 to allow adequate time to prepare and make purchases for fall courses.


All UMW teaching faculty (including lecturers and adjuncts) are eligible to apply through the CTE&I website (  Look for Call for Participation Tab at the top of the website.  All grant applications must include an itemized budget detailing the anticipated use of funds. Because of the nature of this call, we anticipate requests from teams from departments and programs to develop requests.  Applications are accepted throughout the Spring 2014 semester. Review and action on grant applications will occur on a rolling basis until the deadline for the 2013-2014 academic year, which is Tuesday, April 29, 2014, or until all funds are expended.


 Upon completion of the grant project, a 1-2 page project summary will be requested for the purpose of disseminating results and sharing guiding practices gleaned from the individual project. Additionally, within one year of receiving a grant, all funded applicants will be sent a questionnaire in which they will be asked to describe the results and impact of their project. Completion of the questionnaire is a required part of the grant award and ensures eligibility for future CTE&I grants.


Course Development:

  •  Prepare a course reader, course, or lab materials, especially for courses recently approved by the Academic Council that need support for full development.
  • Design and implement classroom assessment to program-level assessment.
  • Infuse the QEP modules into department curriculum.
  • One-time purchase of an example tool/instrument to assess specific student learning (pilot phase).
  • Develop new or redesign existing course materials.
  • Develop or purchase outcomes assessment instruments (i.e. standardized exams/surveys to examine student achievement).
  • Develop assessment materials (i.e. rubric, rating sheets, focus groups questions, etc.) used for course-level to program-level application and to examine student achievement of program-level goals within and across courses in a program.

Active Learning/Student Engagement:

  • Develop new learning experiences, exercises or course modules that promote students’ deeper engagement and assess the impact of this deeper engagement.
  • Infuse service learning across programs, courses and assess the impact of those experiences related to program/course goals.
  • Create authentic opportunities for student leadership and assess the impact related to program/course goals.
  • Game Based Learning/Game Theory/Digital Fluency and assess the impact of those changes related to program/course goals.
  • Create STEM focused Project-based Learning and assess the impact related to program/course goals.

  •  Expand or revise course material with the specific intent of including diverse viewpoints and authors.
  • Revise courses to align with universal course design.
  • Community outreach with the specific intent of diverse populations.
  • Digital Story Telling related to issues of Diversity/Inclusivity/Social Justice.

Technological Support and Technology Integration:

  •  Develop interactive web-based learning activities.
  • Prepare and digitize slides.
  • Update video clips.
  • Develop “virtual” field trips.
  • Create or purchase audiovisual materials.
  • Infuse 2.0 tools to support open scholarship.
  • Develop augmented reality game(s) aligned with program/course goals.
  • Digital Tool Exploration.
  • Game Systems and Discipline specific curriculum development.

Other Possibilities:

  •  Develop or enhance team-taught or interdisciplinary courses.
  • Revise aspects, strategies, or procedures of current courses.
  • Pay a student researcher to help in revision or redesign program/courses and engaged in assessment activities.
  • Provide a modest honorarium for an off-campus speaker.
